11\/4\/16 Update:<\/strong><\/p>\n

With five days to go, it’s too late in the game to put the new Comey is a Trumpie bumpersticker up for sale. (DELETED BY THREAT OF LAWYERS-2018). Besides, have you noticed there are practically NO bumperstickers this election? Or yard signs, at least around here. As I mentioned a few weeks ago, there were a smattering of Trump signs when I was back in W. Penn. for my 50th reunion, but no Clinton signs. In these parts there are signs for local candidates and issues, but neither Clinton nor Trump signs are anywhere to be found.<\/p>\n

And it’s not just me: here’s a right-wing magazine writer who’s noticed the same thing in Houston<\/a>. And here’s a recent article about the lack of bumperstickers and yard signs in the San Francisco area<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Even though the Don’t Be A TRUMPiE bumpersticker idea didn’t quite work like I fantasized it might, the graphics are eye-catching and fit well in the Twitter format. Keep on keeping on and all that.<\/p>\n

So I’ve taken to tweeting to various media outlets, writers, political candidates and the like in hopes that the graphics will attract attention and maybe get “When Donnie Goes Trumping Home” out there in these final days before the election. It may be a total waste of time and energy, but it makes me feel like I’m contributing. It’s my equivalent to walking a precinct knocking on doors.<\/p>\n

Tweeting should also help in my efforts to make “Trumpie” the official nickname for Trump supporters that will stick for generations. The trouble is too many writers are using terms that are all over the map: trumpers, trumpists, trumpistas, trumplings, trumpkins and god knows what else. So every time I see somebody like Paul Krugman or David Brooks or Howard Feinman use anything elseI tweet them and accuse them of having no “ear.” Hopefully, being “writers,” they will understand their error and correct their ways. Like hippies and yuppies and preppies, Trumpies has a “ring” to it that none of the competing terms can match.<\/p>\n

But last week’s Republican convention brought it into focus: hate and fear. He’s running on pure hate and fear. Pete Seeger once said that a good song is a triumph of simplicity, and this is about as simple as it gets.<\/p>\n

Many thanks to the U.S. Military Academy band at West Point for helping out. I’m not sure where the video came from, but I’d bet it’s from Ken Burns’ series on the Civil War. If I’ve misattributed it please let me know.<\/p>\n
