"The Shower Song"
or "Doo Wop Zippity Doo"
Song Blog #5: April 27, 2007.
I was in the shower one day feeling bummed out and started singing nonsense lyrics from when I was a kid to try to cheer myself up—cowboy songs, like "Whoopie Ti Yi Yo," and Disney songs, like "Zippity Doo Dah," and a tune done by Blood, Sweat and Tears from when I was in college, "Hi Dee Ho." The lyrics merged and transformed into a shower-singing song that now cheers me up whenever I need it.
With the right musical presentation, this song could cheer up the world. The music in the demo was done by a mail order service out of Nashville—you send in a check for $150, a lyric sheet, and a bedroom-quality tape, CD, or MP3, and you take your chances as to what comes back. I've used them a few times with varying degrees of success, and this one turned out pretty good. I told them I wanted a production number, like in a Broadway musical, then I took what they sent and went to a studio and did my vocal, karaoke style. A real singer with serious pipes could turn this into the song everybody sings in the shower. Visualize yourself walking up on stage to accept a "Song of the Year" Grammy for your interpretation of it. I truly believe this song, behing happy, whimsical, and eminently singable, has the potential to become a standard. Think big!

They say I gotta find a way
To make my livin’
I gotta find something to do
Hey, I gotta find some peace of mind
I gotta pay some dues.
So I think I'll be a musician
They seem to like what they do
'Cause in this sweet short life
You ain’t got the time
To do what they tell you to.
Yeah, I'll get up in the after morning
I'll play guitar in the early noon
And by the evenin' time
I'll have a bunch of new lines
And maybe written a couple o' tunes
La dot dot dotta dot dotta–
Doo doot doot doobie doot doo–
Hi dee ho
Whoopie ti yi yo
Doo wop scoobie doo.
Well there's folk, pop, jazz or country
So many styles from which to choose
Gospel, soul,
Good time rock-and-roll
And I can damn sure sing those blues.
La dot dot dotta dot dotta–
Doo doot doot doobie doot doo–
Hi dee ho
Yippie ti yi yo
Doo wop zippity doo.
Yeah, I think I'll be a musician
They seem to like what they do
And in this sweet short life
You ain’t got the time
To do all you oughtta do.
Yeah, I think I'll be a musician
I’ll play to pay my dues
And in this sweet short life
You ain't got the time
To do all you want to do.
La dot dot dotta dot dotta–
Doo doot doot doobie doot doo–
Hi dee ho
Yippie ti yi yo
Doo wop scoobie doo.La dot dot dotta dot dotta–
Doo doot doot doobie doot doo–
Hi dee ho
Whoopie ti yi yo
Doo wop whoop dee doo...
